Dear Supporter,

Good news! HB349 has passed out of the house with 101 votes in favor! This overwhelming support to end debtors’ prisons is a huge step forward for Maryland. Passage of the legislation would end the practice of Maryland residents being arrested, and often jailed because of a small consumer debt. A big thank you to Vice Chair Moon for his leadership in passing this bill through the house with strong language that will end this Dickensian practice once and for all.

The Senate version of the bill, SB452, has received a hearing in the Judicial Proceedings Committee, but has not yet been voted out of committee. Contact your senator on the Judicial Proceedings Committee and ask them to pass the bill with the same strong language that passed the House!

Let’s make debtors prisons history!

Thank you for your continued support,

Marceline White
Executive Director
